THE RETIRED METROPOLITAN OF LEMNOS, PANTELEIMON
"The Hierarch Panteleimon of blessed memory, lay name George Mertyres, born in 1908 in Ermione Argolidos of devout parents, was trained towards wisdom in sacred Letters from his childhood. He was robed with the sacred Angelic Schema in the year 1932, tonsured Monk in the Holy Monastery of St. Charalambos Leukon and shortly thereafter, ordained Deacon and Presbyter……
After the completion of his Theological Studies in Athens, he was assigned as Chancellor of the Sacred Diocese of Skyros by order of the Holy Synod; in continuation, he was enlisted as a reserve military Preacher, fulfilling the service allotted to him exceedingly conscientiously and in a manner fitting to things sacred. From this post he was called, in 1951, to the work of Spiritual advocate and educator in the Schools of the National Foundation in Cos Island, Dodecannese, wherein he labored resolutely, and from there, in 1956, he was called to the Synodal Ministries.
The Church of Christ, rewarding the honest efforts of Her clergyman, raised him to the greatest Hierarchical office, electing him to the Sacred Diocese of Lemnos & St. Eustratios, on the 12th of May, 1960.
On the 20th of August of the year 1988, yielding to the unsearchable will of God, he submitted his resignation from his designated eparchy, for reasons of health. And he writes: 'I glorify our Holy God, that He counted me worthy to serve His Church for more than 50 years, 28 of which I served as Metropolitan of Lemnos & St. Eustratios…'
Holy Hierarchs, pray yet once more that the Lord of life and death will give rest to his blessed soul, under the shadow of the tree of life by the rivers of water. And may his memory be eternal."
