The Baptism of yet another Norwegian, the Novice Monk Nicholas Lien.
3 October 1999
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven" (Mat. 5:16).
Dear Thavoria, as for you, I wish to meet you one day at the much-desired Monastery of St. Olav, in a warm atmosphere emanating from experiences of the Monastery of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

May our lives be washed in tears – in interiors tears, if not also in exterior ones. There were saints who could not celebrate the Divine Liturgy if they were not weeping; there existed saints who, as a Father of the Church says, if even a wisp of a spider web, of the mind, psychological or spiritual, stood between them and the Holy Spirit, He did not descend.
Only by tears can our eyes be washed, and see. Otherwise, we are like those of whom the Psalmist says, "eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not" (Psalm 115:5,6).
Just asking for once, in case our stony hearts might soften and be shattered, so that we will be able to communicate with Him; and then, if even one of us catches fire, it’s enough: one candle is enough to illuminate the whole world.
