“Whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a
millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea”

(Mat. 18:6).

“…It is for this that we cannot attract to Christ either ourselves or anyone else - because neither did we win Him, nor do we respect the other person whom we have before us. Yet she, the sometime prostitute, the sometime adulterer, without spending forty years in the desert, became equal to the Apostles. She became superior to the Apostles, because as they were returning with the loaves and other supplies that they had bought to eat, they were scandalized, seeing Christ speaking with her. And afterwards, instead of confessing, they invited Him to eat with them, while internally they were reasoning against Him for “speaking with a woman” (John 4:27). But she brought everyone there where He was, and they took Him back with them; and He stayed with them, while we, now, want to give him His passport to leave Greece, having already cast Him out of our hearts.

Whom? Him Who is everywhere present and fillest all things.”

From the homily of our Very Reverend Elder, Archimandrite Dionysios, on the
Sunday of the Samaritan Woman, May 28, 2000 in our Holy Monastery.

The other thing that I am thinking about is that which Father Dionysios exhibits generally by his demeanor. With his glance, his manner, and his words, he shows us that about which the Holy Schema speaks, namely, one episode in our journey up till this point, and the beginning of a new journey, which is nothing else but a mystical experience. How many “unutterable sighs,” as the service says, must he have poured forth? No one knows, only he himself and God.
