“And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them” (Acts 2:3).

“I ought to acknowledge that your Calendar for the 2000th year after the Nativity of Christ enthused me. All its pages are as precious as pearls, as fragrant as roses and as full as ripe wheat. My eyes and heart stopped short at the quotations from the lectures upon the topics: ‘the Priest as Confessor. the Priest as Confessee, and the Priest before the Challenge of the Year 2000’. I thought, ‘It is natural for a soul which conceives such meanings, inspired by noble ideals, and which actualizes them, to be at the vanguard of the persons of the Spirit’.”

And now? We all lose you? Oh, no. You were conceived as a wild animal. And now you surely resemble an angel-formed victim. Didn’t you seek the wholly unspeakable, untold lightning flashes of the divine beauty? Weren’t you imitating the words that Basil the Great was always saying, in your own life, asking that one look at nothing else?
But, however, what else would give you the right to live in this Monastery? What does the brother of that great father, God’s hidden mystic, say? “Whoever revels in the vision and yearning for God, is chastened by Him,” he says; “By Him, he is strengthened and made greater than himself, returning to his kin, communicating the miracles to them.”
