The word "canon" comes from the Greek word which means "rule" or "measure" or the "straight edge" against which something is measured. The Canons are sometimes loosely and superficially distinguished as "dogmatic" and "disciplinary". The dogmatic canons are those which define a doctrine or distinguish a true from a false doctrine. Disciplinary canons deal with matters of Church order. It is usually understood that the "dogmatic" canons have disciplinary implications, and that disciplinary canons are derived from the practical implications of dogma.
